What's the Kaevle Game Rules? 🤔

Looking for a drinking game that gets you moving and involves a bit of (hopefully accurate) shoe-throwing? Then you might want to try Kaevle (often spelled Kævle in its original Danish/Norwegian context). This is a team-based game where players attempt to knock over a central bottle with a shoe to earn valuable seconds for their team to drink their beers. It's energetic, a bit quirky, and perfect for an outdoor gathering or a spacious indoor area.

What You'll Need 🛠️

To get your game of Kaevle set up, you'll need:

  • Players: Enough for two even teams (e.g., 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, up to 8 vs 8). So, 4 to 16 players in total.
  • Beers (or other canned/bottled drinks): One unopened can/bottle per player.
  • One Large Empty Bottle: Plastic is probably safest! This will be the target.
  • One Shoe: Preferably one belonging to a player, and not your best dress shoe!
  • A Large Open Area: You'll need space for throwing and running – about 8-10 meters (around 25-30 feet) between teams is good.

Getting Set Up ⚙️

  1. Form Teams & Lines: Divide players into two even teams. Each team stands in a line, facing the other team, with about 8-10 meters between the two lines.
  2. Place the Target Bottle: Put the large empty bottle upright on the ground, directly in the middle between the two team lines.
  3. Position the Beers: Each player places their unopened beer can/bottle on the ground in front of them, forming a line of beers for each team.

How to Play: The Shoe-Throwing, Beer-Chugging Relay! 👟🍺

The game revolves around successfully knocking over the center bottle to earn drinking time for your team.

  1. Assign Roles (Rotates Each Round):
    • For each round, each team designates one person to be the "Thrower" and one person to be the "Runner." These roles should rotate to the next person on the right (or down the line) after each team has had a throwing turn.
  2. The First Throw:
    • One team (decide who starts with a coin flip or similar) has their designated Thrower attempt to knock over the center bottle by throwing the shoe at it.
  3. Bottle Down! (Drinking Time):
    • If the Thrower successfully knocks over the bottle:
      • Their entire team immediately picks up their beers and can start drinking them as fast as they can!
      • Simultaneously, the designated Runner from the opposing (non-drinking) team must sprint to the center, set the bottle upright again, grab the shoe, and run back behind their own team's line of beers.
  4. "STOP!"
    • As soon as the opposing team's Runner gets back behind their line with the shoe, they must loudly yell "STOP!"
    • The drinking team must immediately stop drinking and place their beers back down on the ground in front of them. Every second counts!
  5. Bottle Missed (No Drinking):
    • If the Thrower misses the bottle and it remains standing:
      • Nobody from the throwing team is allowed to drink.
      • The designated Runner from the opposing team simply runs out, retrieves the shoe, and brings it back to their team.
  6. Switching Turns:
    • Now, the team that just had their Runner retrieve the shoe (or retrieve it after a miss) gets their turn to throw. Their new designated Thrower takes aim.
    • The game continues in this loop, with teams alternating throws. Remember to rotate the Thrower and Runner roles within each team each round.

Ending the Game: First Team to Finish Wins! 👋

  • The first team to have all its members completely finish their beers is declared the winner of Kaevle!
  • Proof of Emptiness: It's customary (and good sportsmanship) to prove your beer is empty by tipping the can/bottle upside down over your head once you've finished it. Not that anyone would cheat, right? 😉

The Dojo's Take 🍻

Kaevle is a fantastic game if you've got some outdoor space (or a very understanding indoor venue!) and a group that enjoys a bit of physical activity with their drinks. The tension between the thrower trying to be accurate, their team hoping for precious drinking seconds, and the opposing runner scrambling to minimize that time makes for a really engaging dynamic. It’s definitely a game where team communication and quick transitions for the runner can make a difference!

Drink Responsibly 🙏

With the potential for chugging involved, please remember to encourage responsible drinking. Know your limits, ensure everyone is comfortable, and have non-alcoholic options available. Safety first, especially when there's running and throwing involved!

Your Questions Answered: FAQ ❓

  • What kind of shoe is best to throw? Something with a bit of weight but not too heavy or awkward. A sneaker or a sturdy casual shoe often works well. Avoid anything too flimsy or too precious!

  • How far should the throwing line be from the bottle? The 8-10 meters between teams means the actual throw is probably from about 4-5 meters (halfway). Adjust based on your space and how challenging you want the throw to be.

  • What if the shoe hits the bottle but doesn't knock it over? Typically, the bottle must be knocked over for the drinking to commence. A mere touch doesn't count.

  • Can the drinking team do anything to distract the runner? Lighthearted cheering for their own team is fine, but physically impeding or excessively distracting the runner is usually against the spirit of fair play.

  • What if a beer gets knocked over accidentally during the drinking phase? Oops! That beer is usually considered "drunk" or out of play for that person. Try to be careful while chugging!
